United Way raises awareness about poverty

The United Way hosting an event to raise awareness about poverty. It called poverty simulation and it designed to show what real poverty stricken families deal with on a daily basis.

"A family who in one month has to make sure their basic needs are met as far as paying their bills, making sure rent and utilities are done and providing for their families."

Most of these participants are service providers who work with families suffering from poverty every day.

Elva Poscwitz is here to put herself in their shoes. She says she works with cases in Evansville that are worse than any of the ones in these north face outlet packets.

"Living homeless, but yes, they have issues with living day to day, month to month, paycheck to paycheck, if they have a paycheck, or a welfare check."

United Way says there one main goal for this poverty simulation.

"It so that people are sensitized to the problems and barriers that families are facing. Everyone wants to be financially fit," says Baxter.

The United Way hosts three or four poverty simulations a year. For more information, call United Way at 8124217472.
